Mandel’s Mailbag: Does Kerry Coombs survive as Ohio State defensive

I know it’s only been two weeks, but … this season has been kind of awesome, no?

Last Saturday alone, we had the No. 3 team in the country go down, Texas get annihilated by what was supposed to be one of the worst teams in its new conference, Florida State surrender an all-time inexcusable touchdown and then, two days later, USC fire its coach after two games.

… Reading that back, I feel a little guilty how much of my excitement involves people and teams suffering excruciating humiliation.

Does Kerry Coombs survive the season as Ohio State’s defensive coordinator? And for how many million a year will Marcus Freeman make OSU pay for mistakenly not hiring him in the first place, when they do eventually hire him from Notre Dame? —Patrick D.

Sir, have you watched Notre Dame’s first two games? (Or at least the one that was on television.) I’m not sure Marcus Freeman is in much of a leverage situation at the current moment.

As for Coombs, if Day was going to fire him, you’d think he would have done it this week. Ohio State’s next four games are against Tulsa, Akron, Rutgers and Maryland. The Buckeyes should win all those games (though the Terps could certainly put up some points), at which point the urgency following Saturday’s performance will have worn off.
